Charlene B. Brooks, 78, of Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at her home.

Roy Carraway

Roy Edwin Carraway, 85, of Conyers, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Roy lived in Chattanooga for over 20 years where he was associated with Brock Candy Co. as Operations Manager. Roy was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church. He was a graduate of University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Roy served with the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Aleutian Islands and on a Mine Sweeper during the Korean war.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanette; two sons, Richard and John; step-daughter, Cynthia Gail Shrader; and grandson, Sonny Burke.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Carraway; daughters, Barbara Ann Carraway and Cathy Mauragas, of Buford, GA; sons, Roy Carraway Jr., of Lafayette, La., and Gregory Carraway, of Conyers, Ga.; sister, Judi Lawrence, of Redondo Beach, Ga.; brother, Donald Carraway, of Albany, Ga.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at Lane Funeral Home with Rev. Bert Jones officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Ann Davis

Ann Davis, 78, of Chattanooga, departed this life to be with our Lord and join her family in heaven on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.

She was a member of Hillside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 45 years Billy Joe Davis. Ann grew up in Apison, Tenn., and she was a very caring wife, mother and grandmother for many years she worked beside her husband in rental property and the Drag City Drag strip in Ringgold, Ga.

Surviving relatives; three daughters, Joyce (Don) Henley, Peggy (Mike) Long. Susie (Mike) Vines, all of Chattanooga; six grandchildren, Nick and Yancy Henley, Mike Long and Missy Taylor, Tiffany Robbins and Bridgett Nation; 11 great-grandchildren; and one very special brother and sister-in-law, Dee and Delores Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Cape, officiating.

The interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Hazel Dunn

Hazel Bryant Dunn, 74, of Signal Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, after passing away suddenly on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the North Chapel.

Services for Hazel will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the North Chapel with Rev. Mary Jane Allen officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Jimmie Gagliano

Jimmie High Gagliano, a longtime resident of Chattanooga, passed away in her sleep in Peachtree City, Ga., on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.

She retired from the Chattanooga Times in 1989 after 24 years of service as the executive secretary to the publisher. She resided in the East Lake community for nearly 80 years. She was a member of East Lake Baptist Church and later East Ridge Baptist Church after their merger. After moving to Peachtree City, Ga., in 2002, she was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Peachtree City.

Her life was one of service, both in her church and in the community. She was ardent supporter of worldwide missions. As a teenager she attained the status of Queen Regent in the Baptist Girls Auxiliary. As an adult she served in various departments and organizations of her church including President of the Women’s Missionary Union and Baptist Women as well as being a long time Sunday School teacher. She was active in the East Lake Lioness Club having served as president and treasurer and selected as Lioness of the Year. In addition she was an active member of the Greater East Lake Community Council having served as its secretary.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Vincent Gagliano, former Parks Department Superintendent for the City of Chattanooga; her parents, Lester High and Alda Kate Holt High and her brother, Robert King High (the former Mayor of Miami, Fla.)

Mrs. Gagliano is survived by her sons, David and Shirley Gagliano, of Ringgold, Ga., Steve and Judy Gagliano, of Peachtree City, Ga., and Paul and Donna Gagliano, of Hermitage, Tenn.; grandchildren, Stephen and Shannon Gagliano, Daniel and Brandy Gagliano, Suzanne Gagliano, Jamie and Wesley Greene, John Paul and Ashlee Gagliano and Jeffrey Gagliano; great-grandchildren, Aelise Gagliano, Mary Jane Gagliano, Grace Gagliano, Owen Greene, Griffin Gagliano, Ashley Kate Gagliano and Caroline Greene; sister, Martha Neira, of Milton, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. at East Ridge Baptist Church in Chattanooga, with Dr. Ronnie Mitchell officiating. She will lie in state from 11:30 a.m. until time of the service.

Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel.

Joe Gawrys

Joe Gawrys, 55, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

Gene Gorsuch

Ruth Imogene Gorsuch, 91, of East Ridge, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010.

Mrs. Gorsuch was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and belonged to the Love Sunday School Class.

Gene was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Roger Lee Gorsuch; and her son, Alan Lee Gorsuch. Together Gene and Roger were foster parents to 233 children.

Survivors include her children, Kathy Shell Rodgers and husband, Jim, Glenn Gorsuch and wife, Beverly, Denny Gorsuch and wife, Pat; daughter-in-law, Ritsa Gorsuch; foster son, Johnny Hurst; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to South Seminole Baptist Church, 1201 South Seminole Drive, East Ridge, TN 37412.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at the funeral home with Rev. Ron Perry officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral service on Sunday.

Burial will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens South.

Bobbie Grant

Bobbie Sue Grant, 78, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was a member of Chamberlain Memorial Baptist Church for 55 years, the Adult IV Sunday School Department and the Loyalty Sunday School Class. Prior to joining Chamberlain Memorial Baptist she was a member of Oakwood Baptist and Kingspoint Baptist Churches.

Bobbie was employed with M.E. Larsen and Associates Inc. which became Rodgers – Turner and Associates Inc. and was currently employed with Air Filtration Service of Chattanooga. She was a graduate of Tyner High School Class of 1949 and her hobbies included cooking and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Grant Sr.; father, Leon Standefer; and brother-in-law, Jack Grant.

Survivors include her children, John W. (Jane) Grant Jr., of Chattanooga and Susan (Dewayne) Roberson, of Trenton, Ga.; twin grandsons, Grant and Jonathan Roberson of Trenton; mother, Edith McCamish Standefer, of Chattanooga; two sisters, Betty Jean (Charles) Stansifer, of Flintstone, Ga. and Polly Ann (Ed) O’Neal, of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Lois Greer, of Rossville, and Dr. Doris (David) DeLoach, of Waco, Texas; brothers-in-law, Raymond Grant and Jay (Margie) Grant of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Chamberlain Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Jake E. Carroll and the Rev. Dewayne Roberson officiating.

Private graveside services will be held on Monday at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Adult IV Sunday School Department.

Bartholomew Hughley

Bartholomew Dennis Hughley, 53, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 21, 1956. As a member of the Church of Jes-us, he was baptized and anointed to play bass guitar in the church band under the leadership of the late General Overseer, Mrs. Helena Billups (Mother Five) and ministered to by Pastor Sims Bledsoe. During his illness he was upheld in love, hope, and prayer for many years by the current General Overseer, Mrs. Carolyn Lucas.

He was preceded in death by sister, Regina Hughley Burse, and paternal and maternal grandparents.

He is survived by parents, S. J. and Martha L Hughley; daughter, Aquila Hughley (mother and former wife Serita Hughley); brother, Clyde (Claudia) Taylor; sisters, Carla D. (Terry) Paris, and Mirriam (Gerald) Motley, all of Chattanooga; brothers, Thaddeaus Hughley, of San Antonio, Texas, and Champ (Margaret) Carruthers, of Pontiac Mich.; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins from Chattanooga, Birmingham, and Chicago.

Dennis was a longtime employee of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. He enjoyed reading, watching movies, taking care of family, and was loved by everyone that knew him.

Graveside services will be today at 1 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Pastor Sims Bledsoe officiating.

Barnessa Jordan

Barnessa M. Jordan, 37, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.

She was born Sept. 8, 1972 in Chattanooga, to Ms. Barbara Espey-Marbury and Mr. Bobby Ward.

She was a member of Fellowship of Praise Church of God, in Cleveland, Tenn. She was the owner and operator of First Impression Child Development Center. She received an Associate’s Degree in Elementary Education from Chattanooga State Community College and was a 1990 graduate of Howard School of Academics and Technology.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Espey; grandmother, Ms. Maggie Pearl Espey; aunts, Elsie Ward and Bennye Espey; and uncles, Samuel Smith, Herbert Smith and Marvin Espey.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Shedric Jordan; her three children, Shedric Jr., Faith and Jalen; mother, Barbara Espey-Marbury; father, Bobby Ward, in-laws, Robert and Sandra Jordan; uncle, Melvin Espey, all of Chattanooga; brothers, Eric (Sandy) Espey and Sheldon (Twanna) Marbury, of Chattanooga, Chardreck (Judia) Marbury, of Atlanta; stepbrothers, Roger Ward, of Atlanta, and Rodney Ward, of Chattanooga; sister, Pamela Espey, of Louisville, Ky, stepbrothers, Roger Ward, of Atlanta, and Rodney Ward, of Chattanooga; brother-in-law, Derrick Smith; sister-in-law, Dedra (Leonard) Shepherd; godparents, Palmetto Hall, Ida Smith, Riley and Pauletta Walker; many nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

David Moon

David Benjamin Moon, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.

David was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and served our country in the Army. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad with over 40 years of service. David was a member of Bayside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Nancy Ivens Moon; sister, Mavis Goodner; two brothers, Paul and Raymond Moon; and a grandson, Heath Brogan.

David is survived by his wife of 20 years, Elsie Dennard Moon; four children, Gail Wyckoff, Sharon (Mike) Trussell, Shannon (Almir) Dizdarevic and Charles (Allison) Hargis Jr.; five grandchildren, Tanner Brogan, Jeremy Trussell, Rachel (Kevin) Schultz, Caroline Hargis and Ahmed Dizdarevic; siblings, Wallace (Ruth) Moon, Thurman Moon, Gilbert (Carol) Moon and Estelle Scoggins; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the North Chapel.

Services for David will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the North Chapel.

Gerald Utter, 67, of East Ridge, passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at his residence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Floyd Utter.

Geraldine Woodhead

Geraldine “Jerry” Woodhead, 90, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010.

She was a charter member of Wayside Presbyterian Church of Signal Mountain and a longtime employee of Lovemans.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Walden Woodhead Sr.; her parents, Bob and Beulah Lundy; and her brother, Robert Lundy.

“Jerry” is survived by her son, Charles (Jean) Woodhead; grandson, Doug (Deree) Woodhead; granddaughter, Christy (Bart) Hodgins; and three great-grandsons, Tyler Woodhead, Logan and Drew Hodgins.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the North Chapel.

Services for “Jerry” will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the North Chapel with Rev. Marshall St. John of Wayside Presbyterian Church officiating.

TULLAHOMA — Terry Jane Smith, 50, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at her residence.

Thomas Williams

JOHNSON CITY —Thomas H. “Hoggie” Williams, a native of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in Charlotte, N.C.

Tom was preceded in death by his loving, dear wife of 58 years, Betty Standeefer Williams in 2008; his mother, Cleo Jane Guy Morgan; and sister, Dorothy Morris.

Survivors include his three loving, grieving daughters, Donna (Jim) Lorenzen, Charlotte, N.C., Rhonda Hawkins, N. Augusta, S.C. and Lynda (Terry) Widener, Jonesborough, Tenn.

Thomas H. “Hoggie” Williams was a well-known athlete in Chattanooga for many years. He coached and played basketball, fastpitch softball and played two years professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. He was the 1960 Most Outstanding Fastpitch Softball player in Chattanooga as reported by then, Buck Johnson, Chattanooga Times Sports writer. In addition the same year he received the Most Valuable player at shortstop in the State of Tennessee. In 1961 he was named the Amateur Athlete of the Year in Chattanooga in 1961. After leaving Chattanooga, Mr. Williams played softball at the highest competition levels in Columbus, Ind., Louisville, Ky., Portsmouth, Va. and Johnson City. Participating in many ASA World Championships throughout his career, he was designated the ASA Men’s Open Most Valuable Player, in the Indiana State Tournament in 1968.

Mr. Williams served as Regional Director of the Softball Player’s Association which he assisted in organizing in 1993. His senior softball teams competed throughout the Southeast in Senior Tournaments and at the Tennessee State Senior Olympics in Clarksville, Tenn. for a number of years.

“Hoggie” was inducted into the Chattanooga “Old Timers” Hall of Fame in 1996. He earned most valuable player awards in 1989, 1990 and 1991 in the “Forty and Over League”, Elizabethton, Tenn.

“Hoggie” loved the game of Softball. He loved playing and coaching. He loved his players.... they respected the Coach for his honesty, dedication and integrity, on and off the field.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. at Morris-Baker Funeral Chapel, Johnson City.

Receiving of friends is 4-6 p.m. today, Jan. 9 at the funeral home.
